The First Four Steps for Any Tech Problem

Restart: Closing and reopening an app or restarting your computer fixes a surprising number of issues. Do this before anything else.
Check the basics: Is it plugged in? Is WiFi on? Is the browser updated? Are you logged in? These account for more tech problems than you would expect.
Search the error message: Copy the exact error message into Google. Someone else has had this problem. There is almost always a solution on the first page of results.
Document the issue: Take a screenshot before you change anything. Note what you were doing when it happened. This information is critical if you need IT help.

Communicating With IT Support

When you contact IT, be specific. "My computer is broken" helps no one. "Excel freezes when I open files larger than 10MB on the shared drive, starting yesterday afternoon" gives IT exactly what they need to solve the problem quickly. Written communication is ideal: email or ticketing systems create a record and let you be precise.
