The Emergency Fund: Your First Priority

An emergency fund is 3 to 6 months of living expenses saved in a liquid account (meaning you can access it quickly). This is your financial safety net. Without one, any unexpected expense, car repair, medical bill, job loss, becomes a debt crisis. With one, it is an inconvenience you handle.

Start with a goal of $1,000. That covers most single emergencies. Then build toward one month of expenses. Then three months. Put it in a high-yield savings account earning 4-5% so it grows while you sleep.

Retirement Accounts: Start Now, Not Later

If your employer offers a 401(k) with a match, contribute at least enough to get the full match. An employer match is free money. A 50% match on your 6% contribution means your effective return starts at 50% before any market growth.

If your employer has no plan, open a Roth IRA at a brokerage like Fidelity or Vanguard. You can contribute up to $7,000 per year (2024). A Roth IRA grows tax-free, meaning you never pay taxes on the gains when you withdraw in retirement.

Compound interest example: $100 saved at age 25 grows to approximately $1,074 by age 65 at 6% return. The same $100 saved at age 45 only grows to $321. Starting early multiplies your money dramatically with zero extra effort.

Saving on Any Income

Automate your savings. Set up an automatic transfer from checking to savings the day after each paycheck arrives. You cannot spend what you do not see. Even $25 per paycheck builds a habit and a balance. Increase the amount by $10 each time you get a raise.
